L'âge bleu Rose Park

The dedicated rose colletor Rapahela Langenberg (founder of the Lost Beauties association) had a vision: a veritable rose garden is to come into existence with a wild roses educational trail and with ample space for rare, ancient valuables and rose findings.

In spring 2007, the initiation was performed by planting two rows of wild roses that, arranged by origin and botanical relatedness, result in being the basic framework for the future wild roses educational trail.
Those plants and a number of unlabelled Polyantha roses were rescued from a building site in winter 2006/2007.
Between the wild roses there will be indigenous and scenting bushes to arise a draught shield for the more sensitive cultivated roses in the interior of the future park as soon as possible.
In autumn the both exterior sides left and the first beds in the inner were laid out respectively were prepared on the 8000 sqm large-sized area before the city gates of Labenz. Many bulb plants, herbs and herbaceous perennials were already implanted, too.
In the small village in the dukedom of Lauenburg there nearly exist as many kinds of roses as inhabitants by now: about one thousand.
Each summer at minimum 3.000 to 5.000 enthusiasts of roses make a pilgrimage to Labenz to admire the private collections and public rose settlements of the Labenz collectors at the day of open rose gardens.
Yet the gardens and the planting areas in the public green so far are brimful overcrowded, there is a lack of room for further treasures of roses threatened with extinction.
In the near future room should be available in the rose park: on fresh ground rare Remontant roses may unfurl their entire beauty and critically endangered Bourbon roses may find a refuge. Later on, in the interior room of the rose park sheltered from the wind, there will be to admire tea roses and tea hybrids of which there only exists one solitary exemplar.

The concept of the rose park shows some particularities:
The roses are arranged according to their botanical affinity so that visitors may be informed step by step of the derivation of the contemporary cultured kinds. The entire design is subject The dedicated rose collectors of "Lost Beauties" e.V., registered association, have got a vision: a veritable rose garden is to come into existence with a wild roses educational trail, with ample space for rare, ancient valuables and rose findings.

The concept of the rose park shows some particularities:
The roses are arranged according to their botanical affinity so that visitors may be informed step by step of the derivation of the contemporary cultured kinds. The entire design is subject to a conception of colours to provide separate colour areas. Loud colour contrasts will not be seen in our rose park.
The roses are under-planted with colour-coordinated herbs and perennials. Thus, they remain healthy and the visitors get ideas for appropriate rose accompanying plantings.
All plants are organically cultivated and fertilised; chemical plant protection sprays and mineral fertiliser will not be utilised in the rose park.
As the rose park is situated just before the entrance of the town the visitors get the possibility of energizing and dining in the Labenz "Antik Café". Yet until now the brunch, the scones, the tarts and the ambience are fabulous.
The rose park will align its opening hours with those of the "Antik Café" to take advantage of this infra structure. On demand there will be guiding tours f. ex. for tour groups besides the regular opening hours, too. The "Antik Café", too, will flexibly react to visitor groups besides the opening hours.
Right at the entrance of the town the country inn "Witten" is situated. Visitors arriving for several days may stay there overnight in amiable guest rooms. In the scene of garden forums this country inn is already known as the "Labenz-Hilton".
Also the hotels and boarding houses in the wider surroundings are more and more fully booked at greater events.
Some garden visitors spent their entire holidays in our region. According to Ms Dr. Glatzel of the Munich enterprise "Futour" the domain of garden tourism is the most expanding factor of growth in the tourism industry: garden tourists are interested above average, they are educated above average and they dispose of over-average wages.
The quantity of overnight guests and holiday-makers in our region might intensively be increased by a more reinforced integration of and a cross-linking with garden relevant aims and projects.
In future the Labenz rose season will be remarkably extended: As from mid-May the wild roses blossom, in June and July the first heyday of the cultivated types of roses follows and yearly in autumn there are lots of different rose hips to see.
The number of rose related events will increase, too. Not only the open day of rose gardens and the rose fairs in spring and autumn will attract additional visitors but also the workshops which will be conducted in the rose park on a regular basis.
They only aren't suitable for the identification of rose types, but also for own seed experiments and for the biological cuisine.
An other culinary and health related topic is the "Labenz rose honey" which will be produced in the rose park area in cooperation with apiarists and their bees.
By the means of a temporal distribution of our events from April till November we would like to equalise the visitor situation and therefore we would like to take care of a steady-going inflow of an especially interesting and interested group of visitors throughout the year. By the means of cooperation and cross linkage with other projects and tourism relevant aims, the regional capability for a smooth tourism with ecological and cultural accentuation could be remarkably expanded.

The rose park is a time travel through the biogenesis of the roses, a kaleidoscope of their different sorts of loveliness and elemental beauty and its perfect alliance of nature and culture.
